Description

Arctodus (Greek, "bear tooth") is an extinct genus of bear endemic to North America during the Pleistocene ~3.0 Ma.—11,000 years ago, existing for approximately three million years. Arctodus Simus may have once been Earth's largest mammalian, terrestrial carnivore. It was the most common of early North American bears, being most abundant in California.

Arctodus Simus (2 to 1.9 Ma.), 110.2 kg (240 lb) and 800 kg (1,800 lb) as noted by Legendre and Roth, inhabiting a generally more northern and larger range. It was native to prehistoric North America from about 800,000 years ago, and became extinct about 12,500 years ago. It has been found from as far north as Ikpikpuk River, Alaska to Lowndes County, Mississippi. It is one of the largest bears in the fossil record and was among the largest mammalian land predators of all time. The type specimen came from Potter Creek Cave in Shasta County, California. Males from the Yukon region - the largest representatives of the species - would have stood about 1.80 m (5.9 ft) at the shoulder (on all fours), 4 m (13 ft) upright and may have weighed about 800 kg (1,800 lb). Arctodus Simus was the largest carnivorous mammal that ever lived in North America.

The biggest carnivore in North America during the Ice Age. Compared to other bear type animal, these guy's arm and legs are long and slim. It was a quick and fierce predator who chased after its prey and chewed right through them. But these creatures were thought to be more of a carnivore.

Chronology

School arc

Takashi Yamaguchi was explaning to how their group went after the first attack of the Andrewsarchus. His group wandered into the jungle searching for help when they were attacked by the Arctodus Simus. The ancient bear killed at least 3 or more students at night. Finally the teachers Fujimoto and Kawai suggested they set up a School Camp. After they built a camp middle in the jungle, the Arctodus Simus hadn't been seen since.

Exploration Party arc

Akira Sengoku and his exploration party #1 met the trio Tooru Rinzai, Kotomi Kawana and Rei Ooguro at a rocky cliff. Tooru was attacked by the ancient bear before they met Akira's Group. His face got scarred by it.

After promising to the trio they will help search for their bags, they found themselves in the midst of a battle between the Arctodus Simus and the Canis Dirus. Akira hurt one of the bears. The Canis Dirus Ernest saw what Akira had done. He ordered his pack to do the same. Soon after the Arctodus Simus left Canis Dirus territory.
